Nestled in the verdant mountains of Shiga Prefecture is the Miho Museum, a world-class art venue dubbed Shangri-La by its noted architect, I. M. Pei. Pass under elegant cherry trees, through a tunnel, and across a bridge that spans the forest to find an architectural marvel housing a trove of historical treasures.

The museum houses a rotating collection of 250 to 500 works, from a collection of nearly 3,000 masterpieces of religious art, paintings, ceramics, lacquerware, and more from Japan, East/South Asia, and Western civilization. It was designed so that the exhibits and the structure itself coexist with the idyllic mountain setting. Enjoy a meal prepared with naturally grown ingredients, then go for a walk on the stunning museum grounds and take in nature in all its splendor.

Access: From Shin-Osaka Station, take a limited express train to Kyoto Station (about 25 minutes), transfer to the Tokaido-Sanyo Line to Ishiyama Station (about 15 minutes), then take the Teisan Konan bus to the Momodaniguchi stop (about 45 minutes) and walk 10 minutes to the museum.
